The Real Reasons Why TV Technology Is Killing DVD Sales

When was the last time you used your optical unit on your computer? Or even better, when was the last time you rented out a movie on DVD? If the question leaves you thinking hard without being able to recall the exact moment in past when you last held a DVD, don’t worry, most of us don’t remember.

DVD Sales are in a continuous drop ever since the new TV technology was launched and people started to see there’s more to do with the device sitting in their living room. So why are people more interested in streaming a movie than renting or buying it these days?

Streaming is more convenient

Renting or buying a DVD means you actually have to go to the video store and buy it. This also means you have to remember performing such an activity. Sadly, we live in such a crazy world that this task seems tedious and out dated.

Streaming content online is right there, on our TVs. We just have to login on Netflix or Hulu and click the Play button for the movie to start. How about binge viewing an entire season, without even leaving the couch? The latest Deloitte Digital Democracy Survey shows that over 42% of Americans prefer streaming services just because they can binge-view their favorite shows. There’s no way DVDs could ever beat such statistics!

High quality TV still exists

If you’re not a big fan of online streaming, then you probably still enjoy watching television in the old, classical manner; and that’s fine. There are still a handful of great providers out there and with offers like the TV packages from DIRECTV you won’t miss any of your favorite shows or series.

Television has evolved with the TV technology and now there are lots of channels broadcasted in HD. So why rent out a DVD when you get the same quality in TV?

Modern gadgets are the future

We now have an entire series of devices that can connect online and play high-quality videos whenever we want. Netflix works on tablets and phones just as well as it works on a TV so we can catch up with the latest episode from a favorite show while waiting for the bus. Modern gadgets have changed our perception of life and time itself and DVDs don’t seem to have a place in the new order.

Not to mention that DVDs need special equipment to be played while modern gadgets only need a solid WiFi signal.

Virtual space vs. real space

Yes, DVDs take up space, real space, in our homes. On the other hand, streaming doesn’t even take virtual space as you don’t get to save the movie, you’re just watching it.

This can also be seen as a downfall as with DVDs you own that copy of the movie. You can store it in your home and re-watch it whenever you want. Streaming services don’t offer this kind of luxury and they are quite unpredictable as their virtual library of movies can change without notice. Even so, people tend to be more attracted to the convenience of having everything one app away.

The DVD industry is still holding up for now but the trend says it’s time to find its place on the shelves of history. The technology evolved and the movie industry will have to catch up.
